چکیده

This study presents an approach to quantify thermokarst lake change and lake object structure change in spatial very high resolution remote sensing data as part of ESAs "Data User Element Permafrost". Lake Center points are used and multi temporal data is radiometrically normalized using a water mean rationing. A set of specific lake object characteristics (object shape, direction, lake object neighborhood structure and lake density) are parameterized in high resolution Rapideye data and in scanned pan-chromatic films from 1975 (Hexagon). Emphasis is on mapping of structural changes of thermokarst thaw lakes and changes of adjacent lake object properties. For this purpose specific relational neighborhood metrics are developed that quantify structural properties of the thermokarst lake areas and attributed changes. The classification is performed pan arctic on multiple test sites in Siberia, Alaska and Canada. The presented methodological approach provides a robust and transferrable concept for large scale change mapping and is important to quantify changes under potential permafrost degradation conditions. This work is part of the "Data User Element Permafrost" and is a contribution to an observation strategy for permafrost degradation. * Corresponding author.

Landsat-Based Trend Analysis of Lake Dynamics across Northern Permafrost Regions

Lakes are a ubiquitous landscape feature in northern permafrost regions. They have a strong impact on carbon, energy and water fluxes and can be quite responsive to climate change. The monitoring of lake change in northern high latitudes, at a sufficiently accurate spatial and temporal resolution, is crucial for understanding the underlying processes driving lake change. To date, lake change st...

Spatial analyses of thermokarst lakes and basins in Yedoma landscapes of the Lena Delta

Distinctive periglacial landscapes have formed in late-Pleistocene ice-rich permafrost deposits (Ice Complex) of northern Yakutia, Siberia. Thermokarst lakes and thermokarst basins alternate with ice-rich Yedoma uplands. We investigate different thermokarst stages in Ice Complex deposits of the Lena River Delta using remote sensing and geoinformation techniques. The morphometry and spatial dist...

Circumpolar distribution and carbon storage of thermokarst landscapes

Thermokarst is the process whereby the thawing of ice-rich permafrost ground causes land subsidence, resulting in development of distinctive landforms. Accelerated thermokarst due to climate change will damage infrastructure, but also impact hydrology, ecology and biogeochemistry. Here, we present a circumpolar assessment of the distribution of thermokarst landscapes, defined as landscapes comp...

Methane bubbling from northern lakes: present and future contributions to the global methane budget.

Large uncertainties in the budget of atmospheric methane (CH4) limit the accuracy of climate change projections. Here we describe and quantify an important source of CH4 -- point-source ebullition (bubbling) from northern lakes -- that has not been incorporated in previous regional or global methane budgets. Employing a method recently introduced to measure ebullition more accurately by taking ...

Shifting balance of thermokarst lake ice regimes across the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska

[1] The balance of thermokarst lakes with bedfastand floating-ice regimes across Arctic lowlands regulates heat storage, permafrost thaw, winter-water supply, and overwintering aquatic habitat. Using a time-series of late-winter synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery to distinguish lake ice regimes in two regions of the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska from 2003–2011, we found that 18% o...
